Java Software Engineer

DVT is looking for experienced Java Software Engineers to join a new banking and payments technology initiative based in Cape Town. You will be embedded within an established engineering squad and work closely with senior engineers, technical leadership, project management, release management and business analysis teams. The environment is collaborative, delivery-focused and suited to engineers who value quality, accountability and sound engineering judgement. This is an initial 4 to 6 month contract opportunity, with the possibility of extension depending on project requirements. What you will be working on Design, build, and maintain backend services and APIs using Java and Spring Boot within a new-build banking platform. Work with proprietary in-house frameworks that integrate automatically with deployment, tracking, and tracing tooling. Build and maintain Docker files, container configuration, and Helm charts for services (infrastructure and Terraform provisioning is managed by a dedicated in-house platform/cloud team). Develop and consume Kafka-based event streams, including working across multiple topics in an event-driven architecture. Write and maintain SQL against MySQL/Postgres databases. Collaborate with a Senior/Principal Engineer and Team Lead within an existing squad, following Electrum's engineering standards and best practices. Participate in spec-driven development, feeding requirements and context into AI tooling (Claude Code, enterprise licence) to support — not replace — engineering judgement on functional and non-functional requirements. Apply AI-assisted development in an “AI-enabled, not AI-led” capacity: AI may support smaller, well-scoped features, while engineers retain ownership and accountability for core/critical banking functionality. Job requirements Core Technical Stack 5+ years of commercial software development experience 4+ years of hands-on Java development experience, comfortable across a range of versions; Electrum's current proprietary systems run primarily on Java 22, though some legacy client systems span Java 11–25 3+ years of experience building applications using Spring Boot Maven as the build tool, with JFrog Artifactory for artefact management. SQL, MySQL and/or PostgreSQL. RESTful API design and development. Apache Kafka - practical understanding of event-driven systems and multi-topic consumption (deep Kafka expertise not required, but candidates should understand event-driven design principles). Docker - working knowledge of containerised environments, Dockerfiles, and deployment configuration. Kubernetes / Helm charts - comfortable working with container orchestration configuration (infrastructure itself is managed by Electrum's platform team). TypeScript - working knowledge of related front-end/tooling components of the stack. Advantageous experience Experience within banking, payments, financial services or another regulated environment Familiarity with JFrog Artifactory Working knowledge of TypeScript Experience with observability, monitoring, distributed tracing or Elastic tooling Experience working with proprietary frameworks or internal development platforms Exposure to responsible AI-assisted software development practices Minimum Education Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, Engineering or a related field Advantageous Certifications Oracle Java Certification AWS Cloud Practitioner or Associate level certifications Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD) Apache Kafka or event driven architecture related certifications Relevant cloud, containerisation or software engineering certifications Location and working model This is a hybrid opportunity based in Riverlands, Cape Town. Candidates must be available to attend agreed office days for sprint planning, design discussions, whiteboarding and team collaboration. Some flexibility to work remotely is available outside of the team’s core office days. Occasional travel to client sites may be required for workshops, testing or design sessions. Cape Town based candidates will be strongly preferred.
