Toronto, ON Position Overview: Role Overview We are seeking an experienced WordPress & Shopify Developer with strong expertise in server setup and enterprise-level environments. This is a remote role, ideal for someone who has 5+ years of professional experience developing, customizing, and maintaining WordPress websites, along with hands-on experience building and customizing Shopify stores, and proven knowledge of performance optimization, scalability, and secure deployments. Key Responsibilities Build, customize, and maintain WordPress websites and plugins. Develop and customize Shopify stores, themes, and apps, including third-party integrations. Support e-commerce builds and migrations across WordPress (WooCommerce) and Shopify. Set up, configure, and manage enterprise-level servers for WordPress hosting. Optimize performance, security, and scalability of WordPress and Shopify environments. Collaborate remotely with designers, developers, and project managers. Manage server deployments, DNS, SSL, backups, and monitoring tools. Troubleshoot and resolve website/server issues promptly. Conduct regular audits for performance, scalability, and security. Requirements 5+ years of WordPress development experience. Proven hands-on experience developing and customizing Shopify stores (themes, Liquid templating, apps, and API integrations). Strong hands-on coding skills in PHP, CSS, JavaScript, and Liquid (see “Required Code Skills” below). Strong knowledge of MySQL and HTML5. Expertise with enterprise server environments (Linux, Apache/Nginx, VPS, or cloud platforms such as AWS, Google Cloud, DigitalOcean). In-depth understanding of WordPress core, themes, hooks, actions, and filters. Proven experience in performance optimization and WordPress security. Strong knowledge of server hardening (Linux security, firewalls, SSL/TLS best practices). Familiarity with Git or other version control systems. Experience with CDN integration (e.g., Cloudflare, Akamai, Fastly). Knowledge of database optimization and caching strategies (Redis, Memcached, Varnish). Required Code Skills — PHP, CSS, JavaScript & Shopify: Candidates must demonstrate hands-on coding proficiency in the areas below. Practical coding ability will be assessed during the interview process. PHP Advanced PHP (7.4+ / 8.x) with strong object-oriented programming: classes, interfaces, traits, and namespaces. Custom theme development from scratch using the WordPress template hierarchy, and custom plugin development following WordPress coding standards. Expert use of hooks (actions and filters), custom post types, taxonomies, shortcodes, meta boxes, and Advanced Custom Fields (ACF). WordPress REST API: building custom endpoints and integrating external services. Safe database work with $wpdb prepared statements, transients, and the Options API. Secure coding practices: input sanitization, output escaping, nonces, and capability checks. Debugging and tooling: WP_DEBUG, Query Monitor, Xdebug, and Composer. CSS Expert CSS3: Flexbox, CSS Grid, custom properties (variables), media queries, transitions, and animations. Mobile-first, fully responsive builds with pixel-accurate implementation from design files (Figma, Adobe XD). SASS/SCSS preprocessing with clean, maintainable architecture (BEM or a similar methodology). Cross-browser and cross-device compatibility, with accessibility-conscious styling. CSS performance optimization: critical CSS, minification, and eliminating render-blocking styles. JavaScript Strong modern JavaScript (ES6+): DOM manipulation, event handling, fetch/AJAX, and async/await. WordPress-specific JavaScript: AJAX via admin-ajax.php and the REST API, with properly enqueued and localized scripts. jQuery for maintaining and extending existing themes and plugins. Gutenberg block development using React/JSX and @wordpress/scripts (strongly preferred). Build tooling: npm, Webpack or Vite, and ESLint. Performance-minded scripting: deferred/async loading and minimizing third-party script bloat. Shopify Shopify theme development and customization using Liquid, including Online Store 2.0 architecture (sections, blocks, JSON templates, and metafields). Shopify Admin and Storefront APIs (REST and GraphQL), webhooks, and third-party service integrations. Shopify CLI and modern theme workflow: local development, version control, and theme deployment. Storefront performance optimization: Core Web Vitals, image optimization, and managing app/script bloat. Nice-to-Have Experience with CI/CD pipelines and automated deployments. Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes, or containerized environments. Knowledge of server monitoring tools. Familiarity with enterprise WordPress hosting platforms (e.g., WP Engine, Kinsta, Pantheon). Experience with multi-site or multi-language WordPress setups. Experience with Shopify Plus and checkout customization. Headless Shopify experience (Hydrogen or Storefront API-driven builds).
